Broiler rates in India

The broiler chicken industry grew up to 158% from 1985-2005. It has produced 71,851,000 tons of meat. The primary sector produces a parent stock of about a 417million every year worldwide. The broiler expected compound CAGR (compound annual growth rate) will be 12% between 2018- 2022. 

In India, the production has increased up to 3.46 million tons with a growth rate of 6% in 2017. 3.26 million tons of broiler meat was produced in 2016. From the past two decades, the poultry industry has seen major growth in the broiler meat industry. Broiler meat is being consumed in India which is about 3.9 million metric tons in 2020.

As we can see the consumption rate of broiler chicken was 2,872.85 metric tons in 2013 by 2017 it has reached a drastic increase of 3540.6 and by 2020 the consumption rate was increased to 3,955.7. Most broiler meat consumed states in India are Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Utter Pradesh, and West Bengal. The consumption rate is increasing for the broiler up to 8-10% per annum in India. 

The USA stands in the first place in the consumption of broiler meat with 15,332 metric tons. In 2nd place, we have china with a consumption rate of  12,344 metric tons. 3rd place goes for the EU27 which consumes 11,047 metric tons per annum. India stands in 5th place where we consume about 4,196 metric tons per annum. As the consumption of broiler meat has grown where the chicken was sold 115rs at the farmer gate, once it reaches the consumer it is 250rs.

In the above graph, we can see the rates of broiler chicken all over India the prices were in the peak stage from April 2018 to October 2018. The rates were 185 nearly. The price was fallen drastically between October 2019 to April 2020. As the consumption was increasing and the supply was short the price had risen in between the years.

Production of broiler chicken:

Major states that produce broiler meat are Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana. India stands in 5th place in broiler meat production with 4,200 metric tons. The USA stands in the 1st place of production with 18,262 metric tons. Brazil stands in 2nd place with 12,910 metric tons. 3rd stands china with 12,300 metric tons.

In 2017 India’s production of broiler meat was 4.5 million tons. The broiler meat segment was estimated to be strong, according to consumer preference and income levels. Above 80% of the Indian broiler meat is produced by commercial farms. Most of the major companies have their own hatcheries, primary processing facilities, and feed mills. About 65-70 million broiler placements are done in a week.

There are five companies that play a major role Suguna in Coimbatore, Venky’s in Pune, CP,Sneha, and Shalimar in Kolkata are few companies that play a major role, they have 60% of the broiler meat market. Individual farmers carry 1/3rd of the production and the other 2/3rd was carried by contact farmers. Commercial average farm size would be 7000- 8000 birds.

Import of broiler chicken:

Japan imports an immense amount of broiler chicken which is 1085 metric tons. 2nd stands Mexico which imports 895 metric tons of broiler meat. China stands in 3rd place with 725 metric tons of broiler meat. India right now is not importing any broiler meat from other countries.

Export of broiler chicken:

India exports a very less amount of broiler meat, at present India only exports about 10- 15 crores. From Asia, China stands in the first place of exporting broiler. India systematically exports the broiler meat to Oman, Maldives, and Bahrain. Oman imports up to 30% of the broiler meat from India. India exports live birds during 92-93 then the major destinations were Bangladesh which stands with 39% and other countries are UAE and Oman. India exports about 7000 metric tons of poultry meat to other countries. During 2016 there was massive export of poultry meat from India compared to the export now.

How much feed a broiler chicken eats:

A broiler chicken will eat about 1kg of starter, 1.5kg of the grower, and 1.5kg of finisher to reach the market weight. Broiler chicken would take 6weeks to grow. The farmer makes sure that the chick gets enough amount of protein. Broiler chicks are fed with high protein, there is a pre-starter for chicks which is formulated with nutrient levels and digestible protein sources. Meat chicken is fed with 20% protein which consists of ammonia acids to have rapid growth.

Farmers are educated on what to feed and when to feed the broilers. Mostly broilers are fed with soya, maze, and other proteins so that they can grow within weeks of time. Once the broiler reaches the weight of 1.5kg to 2.2kg they are sent to the chicken shops.

Before sending the chicks to farms:

Chicks are kept in incubators for one day and then sent to the farms. Meat chicken is grown with a good number of proteins. And the farmers make sure that they have a better atmosphere. Hatchers have a capacity of 15,840 eggs. Once the egg hatches, they are thoroughly cleaned before sending to the farmer.

Once the egg hatches, body temperature will be 103.5 degrees where its metabolic systems develop. If the temperature is a little cool or warm chick will experience stress, death, or poor growth. Chick can take heat or cold weather where they need to be in 106 degrees. Once the feathers are fully grown then the chicken gets stable and can handle the weather conditions.

Making money in broiler business:

Broiler business is growing very fast and it is also known as the most profitable business. Within six weeks of time, the farmer makes sure that the broiler grows up to 2kgs by giving them a balanced diet and better surroundings. The broiler meat price is increasing, comparing with other livestock it is of less investment and it gives a rapid return on investment. The intake of feed is very less for the broiler and it gives maximum weight for the meat. Broiler farming is a continuous source of income there is no need for a particular season to grow them.

Broiler meat production is increasing every year 7-8 percent. 2013- 2023 economic growth was assessed 3.2% per year, moderately it is weak in developed countries and stronger in the developing countries.
